Wake Up is an innovative interactive film experience that immerses the viewer in the story by blending film and game elements. A team of students from the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart faced the challenge of creating a harmonious mix of film and gameplay while keeping the story and narrative at the forefront.
The team drew inspiration from games with strong cinematic elements, such as Heavy Rain, Max Payne, and L.A. Noir, to achieve the perfect balance between film and gameplay. Wake Up was specifically designed for tablets, as their diverse interaction capabilities provide the best possible user experience.
The user interface and interaction were designed to accommodate casual users who are not used to engaging with interactive films. The team focused on gradually increasing the complexity of interactions, incorporating familiar everyday interaction patterns as visual clues to make the experience intuitive and accessible.
Wake Up was built using cutting-edge web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Popcorn.js was used as an event system to control over 200 events, while Howler.js served as the sound framework. The 360° panorama was created with KRPano’s software solution and, like all other elements of Wake Up, is completely free of Flash or other third-party plugins.
